DeMar DeRozan: From Compton to the NBA

The Early Years

DeMar Darnell DeRozan was born on August 7, 1989, in Compton, California. He was the youngest of four children born to Frank and Diane DeRozan. His father was a truck driver, and his mother was a homemaker. DeRozan grew up in a tough neighborhood, but he was always determined to make something of himself.

Rising Star

DeRozan began playing basketball at a young age. He quickly developed a reputation as a talented scorer and defender. In high school, he led his team to two CIF Southern Section Division I championships. He was also named the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year in 2008.

After graduating high school, DeRozan attended the University of Southern California. He played for the Trojans for two seasons before declaring for the NBA draft. He was selected ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2009 NBA draft.
